More information

Few wristwatches have an origin as closely connected to the golden age of aviation as the Universal Genève Polerouter. Introduced in 1954 under the original name "Polarouter", the model was developed in connection with Scandinavian Airlines System's (SAS) pioneering polar route between Copenhagen and Los Angeles. The design was entrusted to a young Gérald Genta, who would later become one of the most influential figures in watchmaking through creations such as the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak and Patek Philippe Nautilus.

The present Polerouter Date, reference 869113/02, dates to circa 1966 and represents a later evolution of this celebrated design. Its stainless steel case houses a silver dial framed by a finely textured chapter ring, retaining the distinctive visual depth associated with the original Polerouter. The horizontal dial line, elegant hands and date aperture at three o'clock are characteristic features of this particular reference.

Beyond its design, the Polerouter is equally celebrated for its technical innovation. Universal Genève was among the pioneers of automatic movements incorporating a micro-rotor, a compact oscillating weight recessed into the movement rather than positioned above it. This construction allowed for notably slimmer automatic wristwatches. By the mid-1960s, the Polerouter Date was equipped with the refined calibre 69, continuing this important chapter in the manufacture's history.

Particularly noteworthy is the accompanying stainless steel bracelet manufactured by the renowned Swiss bracelet maker Gay Frères, with a folding clasp signed by both Universal Genève and GF. The clasp bears the date marking "3.66", corresponding to the third quarter of 1966, entirely consistent with the watch's production period. Gay Frères bracelets of this design are documented for reference 869113, making the combination especially appealing.

With its aviation heritage, Gérald Genta design lineage, innovative micro-rotor movement and period-correct Gay Frères bracelet, the present watch brings together several of the defining characteristics that have made the Polerouter an enduring favourite among vintage watch collectors.
