"Afton vid Seine"
Signed Arvid Nilsson. Oil on canvas 65 x 50 cm.
Konstsalongen, Geijersgatan 3, Gothenburg, Sweden, 1985, cat. no 4.
Arvid Nilsson’s painting depicts a peaceful and atmospheric view of the River Seine in Paris, with the famous Pont des Arts footbridge at its centre. The tree in the foreground frames the scene, while two figures talk along the quay. The bright water reflects the sky, and colourful rowing boats in shades of purple, green and red add a lively touch. Pedestrians cross the elegant bridge, with leafy trees and the Paris skyline in the soft evening light beyond.
Nilsson lived in Paris between 1909 and 1911, a period that was important to his artistic development. Rather than follow the more radical Cubist and Fauvist movements, he drew inspiration from the Impressionists, capturing light and atmosphere through short, visible brushstrokes and clear colours.
Arvid Nilsson (1881–1971) was among the young Swedish artists who helped introduce early modernism to Sweden. A founding member of the influential artists’ group De Unga, established in 1907, he took part in its groundbreaking exhibitions in Stockholm in 1909, 1910 and 1911. These exhibitions marked an important turning point in Swedish art, challenging the dark, romantic style of the late 19th century.
