More information

When many of his contemporaries and fellow artists made their way to Paris, Axel Törneman initially chose Munich, where he came into contact with the emerging German Expressionist movement. His studies under Carl Wilhelmson at Valand Art School in Gothenburg had awakened his interest in the significance of light and atmosphere in painting. In Munich, he developed a personal and powerful visual language, characterised by the meeting of Symbolism and Expressionism.

In 1902, Törneman continued his studies at the Académie Julian in Paris, where the radical artistic currents of the time challenged tradition and laid the foundations for the breakthrough of Modernism. The international art scene proved decisive to his development. Following a stay in Brittany, he returned to Paris, where in 1905 he executed Nattcafé (Lumière artificielle) in two versions. With its sophisticated treatment of artificial light and its effect on colour, the work became one of his most important. One of the versions was acquired by the art collector Ernst Thiel and is today part of the collections of Thielska Galleriet in Stockholm.

The work represented a significant breakthrough for Törneman in Sweden and established his position in international avant-garde circles. His art attracted attention long before the French Modernist movements, conveyed in part through Matisse’s pupils, achieved wider recognition in Sweden. During the 1910s, he received several prestigious commissions for monumental works, including decorations for the Parliament House and Stockholm City Hall.

The present portrait of Frida Cornelius (née Borch, 1882–1973), executed in 1919, is a fine example of Törneman’s ability to combine the traditions of portraiture with a modern expression. Frida Cornelius is depicted as an elegant, contemporary woman dressed in the fashion of the time. The grand piano alludes to her great interest in music and her fondness for Chopin’s piano music. The setting may possibly be the flat of Frida and Gustaf Cornelius on Hovslagargatan in Stockholm. The guest book of the flat contains a note by Axel Törneman dated 24 September 1918, the year before the portrait was painted.

Törneman’s motif of a woman at the piano exists in at least two versions. It is possible that the present painting represents an early proposal, which the artist subsequently reworked in a new version of almost identical dimensions. Following Törneman’s death, the painting was found among his estate.

Frida Cornelius grew up in a musical and artistically distinguished family. Her mother, Emma Borch, née Hennequin, was French and an accomplished pianist and soprano who studied under the composer Jules Massenet. Frida’s brother Gaston Borch was also taught by Massenet, making it possible that Frida received instruction from him as well.

In the portrait, Törneman combines a confident and vivid characterisation with a refined sensitivity to colour, light and atmosphere. The painting bears witness to his virtuosic painterly ability and his distinctive position in the early development of Swedish Modernism.
