More information

The youth Antinous is said to have been the lover of Emperor Hadrian. The youth drowned in the Nile and was deeply mourned by the emperor, who had it proclaimed officially that he had the status of a god (this was usually reserved for the imperial family). Hadrian commissioned a series of artworks depicting Antinous as, among others, Mercury and Osiris.
