More information

Holbein carpets are a type of early Turkish carpets woven in Anatolia from the 14th century and became common in Europe during the 15th and 16th centuries. They are characterised by geometric medallions, diamond-shaped band ornaments, and braided borders with elements of Kufic style. The carpets are named after Hans Holbein the Younger, whose portraits often depict this type of carpet. Holbein carpets represent a foundational form within Islamic carpet art and have influenced several later pattern traditions.
