The auction's painting is titled "Thunderstorm at Dalarö" on the reverse and is dated to the period before 1900, in addition to bearing a certificate from the artist's estate.

The composition, along with both the title and the dating, evokes thoughts of Thegerström's association with August Strindberg at Dalarö during the summers of 1891 and 1892. Thegerström, who had a summer house in Dalarö, assisted Strindberg in renting a cottage there, and it was likely this companionship with the artist that prompted Strindberg to seriously resume his painting after a long hiatus. A small oil painting by Thegerström, sold at Bukowskis in 2014 (2 December, lot 718), also indicates that Strindberg's painting came to influence him. The cloud formations in the present painting seem to draw inspiration from Strindberg's powerful storm clouds, albeit executed with a brush instead of a palette knife, while the composition featuring the solitary pine tree recalls Strindberg's early painting.
