With Erasmus' preface-letter to Froben at Basel, dated 1524, and the Vita Erasmi preceding the Colloquia, as well as two indices of authors and dialogues. Included at the end is a short essay explaining the usefulness of the book.
Contemporary vellum, lightly soiled, slight paper loss to front pastedown, a few old annotations in ink.
In his Colloquia, first published in 1518, Erasmus of Rotterdam deploys a series of Latin dialogues that are witty, erudite, and biting, originally conceived as linguistic exercises for students but having become a critical mirror of European society in the 16th century. Along with Erasmus’s entire opus the book was placed on the Index Librorum Prohibitorum for the author’s failure to take a sufficiently critical stance against the Protestant Reformation.
