Sten Eklund

The oeuvre of Swedish artist Sten Eklund (1942-2009)

Viewing: 24–27 September, 11am–17pm at Berzelii Park 1 in Stockholm, Sweden
Sten Eklund’s works on paper and paintings on glass typically depicts detailed and delicate fragments of buildings, machines and objects. There is no evidence of human presence, we see only the physical results of human creativity in the form of construction and machines. The oeuvre of Sten Eklund is characterized by geometrical order and detail and the absence of any chaos or disruptions. The artist became known to the public in 1971 when he exhibited “The secret of Kullahuset”, a series of 35 hand-coloured etchings, stained glass paintings, preparatory collections, models and texts about a fictive 19th century botanist, J.M.G Paléen, who entered and documented an imaginary civilisation. Eklund has been described as working in the spirit of both Marcel Duchamp and the Swedish artist Öyvind Fahlström. Sten Eklund has exhibited extensively in Sweden and Finland, and participated in group exhibitions at the Luzern Kunstmuseum, the Serpentine Gallery, London, and Charlottenborg, Copenhagen.
