Konstnärerna var instängda under 1:a världskriget. Smedsuddsperioden börjar 1920 och blir för flera i konstnärskolonin en lycklig och produktiv tid.

1922 får Axel Nilsson Ester Lindahls stipendium och reser tillsammans med Fritiof Schüldt via Tyskland och Frankrike till Italien. Mot sommaren finner de en liten ort söder om Ancona, Numana, där de stannar en period. Här fick de även sällskap av Gideon Börje med familj och Hilding Linnqvist.
