More information

Hilda Granstedt (1841-1932) studied at the Art Association´s Drawing School in Helsinki 1869-1872 at the same time as Amelie Lundahl and Ellen Favorin. She also got private lessons in Stockholm by professor Mårten Eskil Winge (1825-1896) and traveled to Paris in 1874, where she continued her education under the command of Tony Robert-Fleury (1837-1911).
She was generously rewarded for her achievements, but decided to be a drawing teacher already in 1877. Maybe she did not have faith in her potential, and had to choose a more secured source for her livelihood.
Hilda Granstedt´s most known work is the brilliant ”Italian woman”, which belongs to the collections of the National Gallery in Helsinki. The confident drawing technique and forceful atmosphere are strongly present in the few known works by Granstedt.
The calmness and beauty in the angling moment at dawn are impressively captured in this work, that is up for sale at this auction. In every sense a small and unique gem.
