James Brown föddes 1951 i Los Angeles. I slutet av 1970-talet tog han examen ifrån École des Beaux-Arts i Paris för att sedan återvända till USA och New York. 1983 deltog Brown i en grupputställning på Tony Shafrazi Gallery tillsammans med bland annat Basquiat, Donald Baechler, Kenny Scharf, Keith Haring samt en rad andra framstående konstnärer. Browns var en mångsidig konstnär och arbetade med skulptur, grafik och keramik. Han var verksam i New York, Mexiko och Paris och finns representerad på bland annat Museum of Modern Art i New York, Museo Tamayo i Mexico City och på Centre Pompidou i Paris.
