John Newman är född år 1952 i New York och är utbildad vid Oberlin College samt Yale School of Art. Newman har haft över femtio egna utställningar och har deltagit i hundratals grupputställningar. Hans verk finns representerat bland annat på Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Albertina Museum i Wien och Tate i London. Newman har fått ett flertal utmärkelser, så som Guggenheim-stipendiet, American Academy of Arts and Letters och Pollack-Krasner Foundation.
