Basel, Johann Amerbach, 1494. Folio. (30,2 x 21 cms.) [76] + [82] + [58] + [30] + [56] leaves. Second page with full-page woodcut depicting St. Augustine preaching to a large congregation in a church. Imprint on final page of text in the fifth section: ”Basiliee: Anno domini. M.cccc.xciiij”. This volume contains the first five books of seven.

A very attractive and well-preserved copy in 1500s pigskin, richly tooled in blind, raised bands to spine, ms title, library call number to foot of spine, blue edges, clasps and catches preserved. Each of the five parts with monochrome coloured initial on first page, in one case a little more elaborate, text with some initials in red or blue throughout, beginnings of sentences marked with a vertical stroke in colour. Title a little soiled. Text fine and clean, a few small wormholes, attractive old annotations, occasionally cropped. Provenance: Buxheim library (”Bibl. Buxheim”), later monogram of Swedish artist and book historian Arthur Sjögren (1904), signature of Oscar L. Isacson (1934).
