James Coignard föddes 1925 i Tours, Frankrike, och avled i Antibes 2008. Han utbildade sig i Nice och verkade under större delen av karriären vid den franska rivieran där han lärde känna och påverkades av både Matisse, Braque och Chagall. Han har ställt ut över hela världen och finns representerad på museer som Guggenheim i New York och San Franciscos Museum of Modern Art. Detta är en tidig målning som Coignard själv var stolt över. Den påminner en hel del om Dubuffet’s art brut måleri med sin tredimensionella struktur med ristade mönster utöver den pålagda oljefärgen.
