James Coignard föddes 1925 i Tours, Frankrike, och avled i Antibes 2008. Han utbildade sig i Nice och verkade under större delen av karriären vid den franska rivieran där han lärde känna och påverkades av både Matisse, Braque och Chagall. Han har ställt ut över hela världen och finns representerad på museer som Guggenheim i New York och San Franciscos Museum of Modern Art. Denna målning är ett absolut mästerverk av Coignard som väcker minnen av Egon Schieles stadsbilder.
