Johan Leonard Söderlund utbildade sig i slutet av 1810-talet och början av 1820-talet vid Konstakademiens arkitekturskola. Han var inte bara en erkänd målare, utan gjorde sig också känd som en skicklig tavelrestauratör och renoverade under 1830-talet ett flertal porträtt för Klara kyrka i Stockholm.
Johan Söderlund är representerad med sju verk på Nationalmuseum i Stockholm, dessutom bland annat på Norrköpings konstmuseum och Uppsala universitetsbibliotek.
