Steve Canaday växte upp i Detroit och bor och arbetar nu i Echo Park, Los Angeles. Han fick en BFA från WSU och en MFA vid UCLA men gjorde sin informella konstutbildning i Cass Corridor, som blev en stadsinkubator för målare, skulptörer och musiker från slutet av 1960-talet. Canaday har verk i samlingarna av New Yorks Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles och FC MoCA Manchester i England.
