Yoshitomo Nara föddes 1959 i Hirosaki, Japan. 1987 tog han examen från Aichi University of the Arts, och utbildar sig ytterligare vid Kunstakademie Düsseldorf 1993, innan han bosatte sig i Köln 1994. Denna period kom att få ett avgörande inflytande på Nara, under vilken han började syntetisera japansk och västerländsk populärkultur. Idag bor och arbetar Nara i Nasushiobara, Tochigi. Hans konstverk har ställts ut över hela världen. Nara har haft nästan 40 separatutställningar sedan 1984. Hans konstverk finns representerade på MoMA och Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.
