Agda Holst målade under sitt liv flera porträtt av Hjalmar Gullberg. Några av dem är snarlika varianter på samma tema. Detta är ett av dem. De första målades 1927 inför hennes första separatutställning, arrangerad av Skånes Konstförening på Lunds Universitets Konstmuseum. När hon då ville ha något nytt att visa upp på vernissagen föreslog hennes bror Wasa henne att måla av hans vän poeten Hjalmar Gullberg. Konstnärens och poetens vänskap fortsatte livet ut. Ett av porträtten hänger i porträttsamlingen på Gripsholms slott.
