"Navis reipublicae" won a competition arranged to choose a mural decoration for the Grand Committee room in Finland's parliament building in 1930. The competition attracted a great deal of attention, but the first prize was not awarded nor the work executed.
In his career Lennart Segerstråle had at this time started to orientate himself into italian fresco- and mural art and the competion gave him a splendid opportunity to demonstrate his talent in this field.
