More about Qi Baishi

Qi Baishi (1 January 1864–16 September 1957) is one of China’s most prominent artists, known for his whimsical, often playful style. He grew up in a farming family in Xiangtan, Hunan, and was autodidact. After the age of 40, he travelled throughout China, visiting various scenic locations. From 1917 onwards, he was based in Beijing.

Qi Baishi’s paintings typically depict animals, as well as landscapes, figures, toys and vegetables. His theory was that “paintings must be something between likeness and unlikeness”. Qi Baishi was also a skilled seal carver and called himself “the wealthy man with three hundred stone seals” (三百石印富翁). In 1953, he was elected president of the China Artists Association (中國美術家協會). He died in Beijing in 1957.
