Seiko Prospex SLA037J1 – A Limited Edition Tribute to a Diving Icon

In 2020, Seiko marked the 55th anniversary of its first-ever dive watch, a groundbreaking timepiece introduced in 1965, when highly water-resistant watches were still a rarity. Featuring an automatic mechanical movement and 150 meters of water resistance, it was designed for exceptional reliability and legibility, even in the harshest conditions. Its robust construction and performance made it the preferred watch for the Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition from 1966 to 1969.

The modern Seiko Prospex SLA037J1 is a faithful recreation of the original 1965 diver, preserving its classic design while integrating state-of-the-art technology. At its core is the Hi-Beat Caliber 8L55, meticulously crafted by expert watchmakers at the Shizuku-ishi Watch Studio in northern Japan. While visually almost identical to its predecessor, the case diameter has been slightly increased by 1.9mm, making it more in line with contemporary proportions.

Despite staying true to its vintage inspiration, this timepiece offers enhanced durability and functionality. It features a box-shaped sapphire crystal, improved 200-metre water resistance, and a super-hard coating that provides added protection against scratches. As a nod to its heritage, the case back bears the same dolphin emblem as the original 1965 model, paying tribute to Seiko’s pioneering spirit in dive watch innovation.
