More information

Rolex Cosmograph Daytona “Floating Cosmograph” – Ref. 16520

A well-preserved and early example of the iconic Rolex Daytona ref. 16520 – the first automatic version of the model. The watch was originally sold by Bjerke Urhandel in Oslo in the late 1980s and remained in the original family's possession for over 30 years before being sold again through Bjerke's Pre-Owned department to the current owner. This is the first time the watch is offered at auction.

The watch has an L-series number, which places production in a very short period between 1989 and early 1990. The white dial is of the unusual and sought-after variant with the "Floating Cosmograph" layout – where the model name is clearly separated from the other text. This dial layout appears only on the R-series and early L-series. The inverted six in the chronograph's hour counter is also present here – a characteristic detail that makes the earliest examples particularly desirable.

Another rare component is the so-called Mk II bezel with the 225 marking, a bezel type that was only produced for a short period and is virtually exclusively found on the L-series. The watch is fitted with the original Oyster bracelet, ref. 78360 with end links 503.

The movement is Rolex calibre 4030 – based on the Zenith El Primero but heavily modified by Rolex to meet the brand's own standards for precision and reliability.

The watch is accompanied by service papers from Rolex (including warranty until December 2025), documentation from Bjerke, the original box, and accompanying booklets. The combination of L-series, Floating Cosmograph dial, inverted six, and Mk II bezel makes this one of the most sought-after versions of the early automatic Daytonas – a holy grail for collectors.
