A pair of Neo-Rococo silver champagne coolers/ vases, maker's mark of Carl Johan Tegelsten, Saint Petersburg 1849.

Urn-shape, raised on a profiled base with grape clusters and leaves, and with foliage decorated handles. Attached cylindrical vase inside. The upper rim is decorated by a detachable brim. Marked on the base, at the upper edge, inside and on the brim.
Height 27 cm, diameter 26 cm. Total weight aprox. 7200 g.

Carl Johann Tegelsten (1798-1852) – a 19th-century silversmith of Finnish descent active in Saint Petersburg. Since the 1830’s much of his work was retailed by the fashionable English Store, owned by the merchants Constantin Nicholls and William Plincke. A leading court silver and goldsmith, Tegelsten became famous for producing services and table wares in the Neo-Rococo taste in preparation for the marriages of many members of the Romanov family.
