Provenance

The collection of Elis Eklöf. Elis Eklöw worked for the familys import house August Eklöw (founded by his father in 1898). The company became focused on import from Asia after Elis Eköws first trip to China and Japan in 1922.

Artist

Tsuchiya Kōitsu 土屋光逸 was active within the Shin-hanga movement. He trained under the ukiyo-e master Kobayashi Kiyochika for nearly twenty years, learning the dramatic variations of light for which he later became known. His early subjects primarily depicted scenes from the First Sino-Japanese War, while his later works mainly consist of poetic landscapes. Kōitsu worked with the famous art publisher Shōzaburō Watanabe from 1931.
