Artist

Kônan Tanigami (1879–1928) was a Japanese artist from the Hyogo region, renowned for his Kachō-e Nihon-ga works—traditional Japanese paintings depicting birds, flowers, and nature. Tanigami was among the first Japanese artists to portray Western flowers in vibrant colors, blending traditional techniques with Western artistic influences. His works is distinguished by its meticulous research and vivid woodblock prints. In 1917, Tanigami was commissioned by the Japan Fine Arts Exhibition (Teiten) to create a celebrated series of peony prints, later published as Shokei Kakicho (“A Book of Flower Forms and Shapes”). His refined color gradations and innovative style elevated floral painting within Japanese art, securing his reputation as one of the finest masters of this genre.
