More information

Samuel Walters (1811 - 1882) was a British maritime artist known for his paintings of naval battles. Growing up near the London docks, Walters served as an apprentice in his father’s gilding and framing business. He and his father left London for Liverpool in 1826, spending over a year in the city of Bristol on the way. In 1830, the artist exhibited his painting Dutch Boats in a Fresh Breeze at the Liverpool Academy of Arts, this was the first of 99 paintings shown at the academy over the next 35 years. Walters’s popularity was such that he produced engravings of his original paintings to keep up with demand for his work. The artist died on March 5, 1882 in Bootle, United Kingdom.
