Sketch for a textile pattern.
Not signed. Gouache on paper, 72x132 cm.
Wear due to age and use.
Gift from the artist to textile artist Liisa Kota (b.1940), who made a long career for the textile company Finlayson.
Based on the gouache painting Liisa Kota designed in the 1980's a moomin pattern for Finlayson.
Liisa Kota recounts her meeting with Tove Jansson:
"I was selected to design Moomin fabrics at the Finlayson studio in Tampere.
I met Tove at her studio on Ullanlinnankatu in Helsinki. It was spring 1988, and I bought Tove a bouquet of blue grape hyacinths from Helsinki’s Market Square as a gift.
Tove taught me how to draw Moomins. “I’ve designed a printed fabric myself once,” Tove said suddenly. “I wonder where that pattern is?” We went up to the attic, and in a closet there, Tove found the printed fabric pattern rolled up in a cardboard box.
Tove gave me the fabric pattern as a keepsake.”
