More information

Woldemar Tank (1903–1997) was an Estonian-Swedish artist who came to Sweden as a refugee during World War II.
He is primarily known for his atmospheric landscapes and urban motifs, often executed with a broad brushstroke and a characteristic richness of color.
After establishing himself as an artist in Sweden, he extensively painted Swedish environments, such as the harbor in Malmö, various views of Stockholm (for example, Tranebergsbron and Norrbro) and motifs from Gothenburg and Båstad. His painting style is described as influenced by his teacher Nikolai Triik, with a focus on a fresh sense of nature and rich color tones, often in blue-green shades. The auction's painting "Spring Morning" is a clear and shining example.

Woldemar Tank participated in exhibitions of Estonian art in New York, among others, which connected him with the international Estonian exile community.
Woldemar Tank studied painting with Ants Laikmaa in 1924–1925 and at the Pallas Academy of Fine Arts in Tartu from 1926–1932. He also studied violin at the Academy of Music in Tartu from 1927–1932.

In Sweden, he exhibited in, among others, Malmö, Växjö, Kalmar, Kiruna, Karlskoga Motala and at the renowned Galerie Moderne, at Nybroplan in Stockholm.

Together with Lembit Nõmmeots, he exhibited in Halmstad in 1948 and he participated in the exhibitions Estonian Art shown at the Värmlands Konstmuseum in Karlstad, Estonian and Latvian Art at Liljevalchs in Stockholm and the Estonian exhibitions in Malmö and New York.
