Swedish Modernists

Modernism made its breakthrough in Sweden in the early twentieth century, when Swedish pupils of the French artist Henri Matisse presented their works in Stockholm. This marked the beginning of a new era in Swedish artistic life, a period characterised by boldness, vibrant colour and formal experimentation. The Swedish modernists broke with tradition and convention, allowing colours to glow in rich, intense hues. Through a vivid form of colour expressionism, they succeeded in capturing the pulse and spirit of modern life.

This auction brings together several of the artists who shaped and renewed Swedish modernism—artists whose work combines energy, individuality and a spirit of experimentation in timeless creations. Among those represented are Isaac Grünewald, Gösta Sandels, Bror Hjorth, Evert Lundqvist, Karin Parrow and Pelle Åberg.
