Hirano Hakuho was a nihonga and ukiyo-e artist, born in Kyoto in 1879. There is sparse information about the artist, a man of great integrity. However, his quiet compositions with subtle colors and playful textures are much-loved and classic examples of 1930s bijin-ga. During the 1930s, he produced a set of five bijin-ga prints published by the famous publisher Watanabe Shozaburo, including the beloved “After a Bath” (1932) and “Before the Mirror” (1932). Hirano chose to depict women facing away from the viewer, drying or arranging their hair. Several of his works were shown at the Toledo Exhibitions of 1930 and 1936.
