In this depiction of the landscape of Skåne, we encounter Ebba Orstadius on home ground. With its gently rolling hills, farms and winding stream, the artist creates a creative and imaginative tribute to Skåne. Using light contours and a restrained palette, Orstadius allows the terrain to unfold beneath the expansive sky. Particularly striking is her skilful and assured use of the ink pen, where the fluid line captures the forms of the trees, the movement of the land and the rhythm of the landscape with minimal means. The blue ribbon of water leads the eye through the composition and lends rhythm to the open fields. There is no drama here, but rather a warm familiarity with the place.
More about Ebba Orstadius
Ebba Ingeborg Orstadius was born in 1885 in Stehag, Skåne, and worked as a painter and draughtswoman. She studied in Copenhagen and Germany, and early on began seeking out her subjects on travels through Sweden and Central Europe. Her stays in 1911 and 1912 in Dachau, just outside Munich, proved particularly significant. At the time, Dachau was an internationally renowned artists’ colony and an important meeting place for landscape painters.
In Dachau, Orstadius worked with subjects from the River Amper and the vast Dachauer Moos. Her interest centred on the landscape’s shifting moods - mist, moonlight, snow, twilight and the play of light across water and woodland.
In the spring of 1912, she presented an extensive solo exhibition at Lunds Universitets Konstmuseum, comprising 105 drawings, wash drawings, pastels and watercolours from Sweden and the Continent. The exhibition bears witness to an already established and productive artistic practice. Orstadius later continued her work in Sweden and died in Malmö in 1960. Her early works place her within the fascinating Swedish-German artistic milieu that developed around Dachau at the turn of the century.
