Nils Forsberg’s monumental painting Gustav II Adolf before the Battle of Lützen is held in the collection of the Gothenburg Museum of Art. Executed in 1900 and exhibited at the Exposition Universelle in Paris that same year, it constitutes, in a sense, la grande finale of nineteenth-century history painting, depicting one of the most celebrated events in Swedish history. The artist’s staging is intended to evoke feelings of national pride and make us feel the wings of history. In connection with this composition, Nils Forsberg produced numerous studies, of which the present work is one.
