Nils Forsberg’s monumental painting Gustav II Adolf before the Battle of Lützen is part of the collection of the Gothenburg Museum of Art. Executed in 1900 and exhibited at the Paris Exposition the same year, it constitutes, in a sense, la grande finale of nineteenth-century history painting, depicting one of the most famous events in Swedish history. The artist’s staging is intended to evoke feelings of national pride and make us feel the sweep of history. In connection with this composition, Nils Forsberg produced numerous studies, of which the present work is one.
