Hertha Hillfon made her debut as a ceramic artist in 1958. During the 1960s, she combined clay with motifs from everyday life: kitchen utensils, clothes and food – her round loaf of bread has become a classic. During the 1970s, she received several commissions, including a large wall relief in 22 parts for Operaterrassen in Stockholm. One of the sections depicted the full, sensuous mouth that would become her signature motif.
The mouth was made not only in clay, but also in glass, plastic and aluminium. A plastic version was produced as a multiple for Konstfrämjandet’s exhibition Multi Maxi Mini in 1970.
