The artist's family.
M/S Stockholm 1941 was an ocean liner built between 1938 and 1941 at the Monfalcone shipyard in Italy for Svenska Amerika Linien. The interiors were lavish, and Stig Blomberg was one of several artists commissioned to create the ship’s artistic decoration. The present relief is a prototype for the reliefs executed in pear wood for the first-class dining room on M/S Stockholm.
The ocean liner was intended to operate on the Gothenburg–New York route, with delivery scheduled for 1939. However, construction was delayed by a major fire that almost completely destroyed the liner, meaning that she was not delivered until October 1941. As the Second World War had broken out, Svenska Amerika Linien had no use for her, and in November 1941 she was sold to Italia soc Anon di nav, Genoa, Italy, and renamed M/S Sabaudia.
The ocean liner was converted into a troop transport and laid up in Trieste, Italy. On 9 September 1943, the German occupying forces seized the vessel and converted her into an accommodation ship. On 6 July 1944, Trieste was subjected to a British air raid, during which the liner was bombed, capsized and sank. The liner was salvaged in 1949 and scrapped.
The sculptor and artist Stig Blomberg was born in Linköping in 1901. He studied at the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm under notable figures such as Carl Milles. In the late 1920s, Blomberg embarked upon several trips around Europe and America, during which he spent the longest in Paris. In 1951 Blomberg returned to the Royal Institute of Art to teach as a professor. Blomberg is now classified as one of 20th century's most commissioned and prolific sculptors, with many of his bronze sculptures decorating the surfaces of public buildings, plazas and squares. The recurring theme of his work is children and youth, portrayed with joy and humour.
