Around the turn of the last century, several publishing houses were established that published both books and magazines for a younger audience. For these publications, some of the period's foremost artists were engaged to illustrate the fairy-tales. Among the standard-bearers of the art of illustration in Sweden, Jenny Nyström, John Bauer, and Gustaf Tenggren should be mentioned, along with many others who worked within a tradition shaped by the Arts and Crafts movement and the prevailing fascination with Norse mythology, creating a visual world that breathed national romantic undertones. The stories, populated by the creatures of the forest, by trolls, princesses, knights, and fairies, came to life and enchanted us on a very special journey through time and space, to the distant lands of fantasy.
