More information

Rhonda Zwillinger was part of the vibrant art scene that emerged in New York’s East Village during the 1980s. Here, a new generation of artists sought alternatives to the established art world, exhibiting in apartments, temporary galleries, abandoned spaces, and nightclubs. Zwillinger, who studied at Brooklyn College and continued her education at institutions including the Art Students League and Parsons School of Design, became associated with the scene’s expressive and boundary-crossing approach.

In her painting, she developed an intense, maximalist visual language in which color, pattern, and ornament converge in densely layered compositions. Decoration is not an addition but a fundamental principle: the pictorial surface is filled, charged, and pushed toward deliberate excess. Zwillinger’s painting thus reflects the energy of the East Village scene and its disregard for established hierarchies between art, decoration, and popular culture. Throughout the decade, she exhibited regularly at Gracie Mansion Gallery and became a distinctive voice within this milieu.
