BOOK, The Works of Statius, 1595.

Publius Papinius Statius:

Opera quae extant, Ioh. Bernartius ad libros veteres recensuit & scholiis illustravit. [With:] Ioh. Bernart ad P. Stati Papini [...] scholia.

Antwerpen, Plantin, 1595. 8vo. 18 x 11 cm. 432; + 176 pp. Each title with Plantin’s woodcut device, which also occurs on the final leaf of the first work.

Contemporary yapp vellum, somewhat scuffed and worn, ties missing, first title with two old circular library stamps in red. With an interesting sort of repair to pp. 65/6: a paper flaw resulting in some text not being printed on p. 65 has been repaired by tipping in a small piece of printed paper with the missing text.

Adams S 1677.

Publius Papinius Statius (c. 45-c. 96 AD) was a Roman poet of the 1st century AD (Silver Age of Latin literature). His surviving Latin poetry includes an epic in twelve books, the Thebaid; a collection of occasional poetry, the Silvae; and an unfinished epic, the Achilleid. He is also known for his appearance as a guide in the Purgatory section of Dante's epic poem, the Divine Comedy.
