Maximilian Maksolly föddes i Tallinn, Estland 1884 och var bosatt i Rio de Janeiro, Brasilien när han gick bort 1968. Efter sin utbildning i Talinn och på Alexander von Stieglitz's konstskola i St Petersburg reste han runt i Europa. Under åren 1917-1923 var Maksolly verksam i Ryssland och restaurerade väggmålningar och målade porträtt. Maksolly återvände sedan till Estland för att ägna sig åt porträttmåleri och nådde framgång med sina framställningar av det Estniska Frihetskriget. 1929 lämnade Maksolly Europa för att bosätta sig i först i USA och senare i Brasilien.
