Anton van Dycks målning "Den heliga familjen" utfördes kort efter konstnärens vistelse i Italien som slutade 1627. Målningen utfördes som ett grafiskt blad av Schelte Bolswert (1586-1659) (spegelvänt). Då auktionens målning även den är spegelvänd mot van Dycks original har den troligtvis utförts med det grafiska bladet som förlaga.
