The subject is taken from the the district of Bohuslän north of Gothenburg, known for its coarse coast void of vegetation.

During during his lifetime, Emile Zoir received great acclaim internationally. Following his studies in Gothenburg, Zoir first spent time in England, then in America, where he studied for several years at the Institute of Fine Arts in Boston. He continued his studies at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris (1890-94). In 1894 he married the Swedish artist Hildegard Rygård (1876-1935). Following a years stay in USA they returned to Paris, but continued to travel, spending time in Italy, Germany and other countries, also intermittently visiting their home country. After their return to Gothenburg in 1907, four consecutive exhibitions of Zoir´s work were held there within the space of only ten years (1909, 1911, 1913 and 1917). International exhibitions in which he participated include: World Fair Exhibition in Liege in 1905, the Biennials in Venice 1905, 1907 and 1909, Paris Salon in 1907, Secession Exhibition in Munich in 1908, "Espozione Internazionale' in Rome in 1911, First International Graphic Art Exhibition in Leipzig in 1914 and The Baltic Exhibition in Malmö in 1914. International exhibitions devoted entirely to his work was held In 1911 at the Galeries d'Allard in Paris (116 works including etchings), 1916 at the Brooklyn Art Museum and in 1929 at the Anderson Galleries in New York. His last separate exhibition in Sweden was held at Gothenburg Konsthall in 1926. Throughout his career he was awarded a number of awards; Grand Prix Internationale, Paris, Goldmedal twice in Barcelona, Goldmedals in Buenos Aires and Milan.
