Stephan Gilbert was born in Scotland, and began studying architecture in London at the Slade School of Art at nineteen years of age, and started painting (at the principals suggestion) in 1930. Gilbert moved with his wife (skulptor Jocelyn Chewett) to Paris and during WW2 they moved to Ireland afterwhich they once again returned to Paris. Gilbert is known as one of the few Brittish artists who adopted the 1950s french avante garde movement completely. He was greatly appreciated by Asger Jorn which led to him becoming the second brittish member of the COBRA group.
