More information

Timo Sarpaneva collected a collection of antique wooden sculptures in the 1960s and 1970s.The nature of the wooden sculptures was rough and lush, as was the style of Sarpaneva's own glass works during these decades. The Baroque abundance of woodcarvings formed surprising and interesting details in the modern and cool interiors of Sarpaneva's various homes.
Wood sculptures of Franciscan monks also followed Sarpaneva for decades. He acquired the ‘Boys’, as he called them, from Irja Lastunen's antique shop in Tampere in the 1960s. The eccentric dealer often refused to sell if the buyer was somebody she disliked. She agreed to sell the ‘Boys’ to Timo Sarpaneva after several visits and long negotiations. Sarpaneva occasionally wondered about the origin of the sculptures. Where had they been made, and how had they ended at Irja Lastunen’s antique shop in Tampere? These questions were never answered.
