More about Eva Brummer

She was a Finnish textile artist who was born in Tampere in 1901 and lived a long life until 2007 in Espoo. She is especially known as an innovator of the Finnish rya tradition and as a developer of textile art.
She studied in the 1920s at the Central School of Arts and Crafts and trained as a drawing teacher. After that, she worked for a long career as a teacher at a secondary school in Lauttasaari, where she taught drawing for several decades until the late 1960s, when she retired. Later she lived in Hagalund in Espoo.
As an artist, she focused especially on ryas and began in the 1930s to develop their design in collaboration with weavers. She worked for a long time with the Friends of Finnish Handicraft and designed a large number of rya models. Her working method was considered unusually free and painterly, as colours and forms often emerged intuitively and were guided by moods rather than careful planning.
Her works were widely appreciated, and during her career she received several awards and honors that strengthened her position as an important innovator in Finnish textile art. Her works in particular attracted attention in the mid-20th century, and her influence was felt for a long time in the development of rya art.
She was married to the artist Arttu Brummer.
