More information

Ferd. Lundquist & Co was a department store in Gothenburg, and a precursor to the Nordiska Kompaniet (NK) department store in Gothenburg. The merchant Ferdinand Lundquist (1837-1916) opened his settlement store on 17 May 1864, which initially consisted of just one room, one assistant, and a display window. Over the years, the firm expanded by taking over more and more rooms in the well-known corner property at Östra Hamngatan 42. Before starting his own business, Lundquist had worked for seven years as a commercial assistant, partly with the firm Uddgren & Holter and partly with Salomon & Williamsson, which at the time was Gothenburg's largest company in the settlement industry.

In 1941, Director Herman Turitz (owner of, among other things, the EPA department stores) took over the majority of shares in Ferd. Lundquist & Co. With the expansion of the number of departments that took place in the 1940s, the company transitioned into a fully developed department store, which was purchased by Nordiska Kompaniet in 1967. In connection with this, NK built a new department store on the site of the old one, which opened in 1971. The property was designed by the architectural firm Contekton.
