In 1898, the Finnish Craft Association announced a furniture design competition with the aim of selecting furnishings in a Finnish style for Finland’s pavilion at the 1900 World Exhibition in Paris. The competition entries were to include designs for the 'furnishing and decoration of a bedroom,' and architect Yrjö Blomstedt’s proposal was awarded second prize. Excerpts from the design drawings were published in the journal Suomen Teollisuuslehti, issue no. 22, in 1898.
The chest of drawers exhibited at the Heinola City Museum has the same details as the writing desk that is for sale, and there are also other pieces of furniture that correspond to the drawings in the competition proposals
