Gérard Rigot was a French artist who also practiced working in different fields but from 1959 as a painter and a sculptor in Paris. In 1978, at the age of 49, he moved to the countryside outside Toulouse. Initially inspired by his cat, Rigot began sculpting and painting furniture in oak and pine. His style is easily recognisable through its combination of form and function, always with a humorous and colourful twist, depicting various types of animals. Gérard Rigot continued working well into old age and, in his later years, was assisted by studio assistants.
