Gérard Rigot was a French artist who worked in Paris. In 1978, at the age of 49, he moved to the countryside outside Toulouse. Initially inspired by his cat, Rigot began sculpting and painting furniture in oak and pine. His furniture is easily recognisable, featuring a humorous and colourful combination of form and function, and often incorporating various types of animals. Gérard Rigot continued working well into old age.
