Unknown artist 20th century, untitled
Signed Berndt af Frostenius (?), oil on panel, approx. 80 x 63.5 cm
Clarification of the inscription on the back of the painting:
This painting is hereby entrusted to the Flyinge Foundation to be hung in a prominent place according to the director's determination. The trust is valid as long as the Flyinge Foundation or a corresponding organisation is engaged in breeding activities at Flyinge. It is also stipulated that thoroughbred breeding is conducted at Flyinge, supported by the Liedler Foundation or in other ways.
The painting depicts thoroughbred mares in the so-called Stohagen inside the racetrack. The most prominent mare is the brown one in profile. Her name was Amacita, purchased from England by the then director of the Flyinge stallion station and the state, Master of the Horse Hodder Stjernswärd and Torsten Gustavsson.
She is here in foal to a later very successful racehorse, including a Derby winner, namely Amigo.
The chestnut slightly behind is Heavenly Twin by Hyperion.
The artist was Berndt af Frostenius (spelling?), originally from Finland, who came to Sweden after the Winter War. He donated the painting to Master of the Horse Stjernswärd in gratitude for his generous hospitality.
